Contact Lenses

Question:

One of your current patients talked highly of you.  I currently wear contacts for near sightedness and astigmatism. However, the contacts do not help with  close vision/reading (I am 42 years old).

The current eye doctor I saw said that they did not make contacts  for all the above. Is that correct? I currently wear  reading glasses over the contacts that I bought at the  drug store.

Answer:

To correct blurred vision at any age, at any distance requires one of three options: glasses Can I Buy Reading Glasses for $5.00?, contact lenses Optical Facility ,or refractive surgery LASIK laser vision correction surgery / Laser Vision Correction:  The Miracle of the 21st Century /LASIK Checklist (.pdf)

Contact lenses are available to offer improved vision for nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia ( decreased focus ability for near vision).  Additionally, there are contact lenses available to correct all of these conditions, if all are  present in the same patient. The eye specialists at the Florida Eye Center fit these lenses. Contact Lenses

These "combination" lenses were only recently made available and have a less predictable success rate with each additional eye condition.

The expense, effort,  and time required for a proper fitting, analysis, and follow-up care are much greater than for other kinds of lenses.  Experience has shown that most patients with all 3 focus problems achieve better vision with other, simpler options.

For instance, you have found adequate vision while wearing contact lenses for your distance prescription and adding reading glasses for near tasks. This is simple, safe, and successful.

Another option is correcting one eye for distance vision while correcting the fellow eye for near focusing.  This is known as monovision and has freed many of our patients from their dependence on glasses. This can also be very successful.

Again, thank you for your pertinent question.  Feel free to contact us at any of our 4 convenient locations if you have any other needs or would like a 2nd opinion.

Sincerely,
