Diabetic Eye Care
Question:
Now I really do have a question for you. I have
read your article on diabetic eye care with
interest - it is very good, very informative.
What I should like to know is this - does
extensive use of computers have a detrimental
effect on the eyes of diabetics more than on the
general population? When I did a computer
course 7 years ago, we were advised that one
should take a break from the screen every 30
minutes or so, but this applied to everyone. Is
the sight of a diabetic patient more at risk?
Answer:
Diabetes makes every part of your body "age"
faster. The delicate eyes are no exception. In
fact, the eyes are even more delicate and are
more severely damaged by diabetes.
There is no pain and no pus while the damage is
progressing , so the only way to find it and try
to stop the damage is to have frequent eye exams
that include dilation to examine the retina.
Eye Exams
The
damage happens sooner and is worse ,the longer
you have diabetes, especially, if the control is
poor. But there is hope.
Computers have other topics to discuss but they
do not "hurt/ damage" the eyes.
