Eye Examination
Question:
I have 20/20 vision and was wondering if I should
get my eye exam in the glass store or from a
physician. What would be included differently?
Basically, I just want to check if my
eyes are still in good condition.
Answer:
There are times when getting eyeglasses from the
drugstore would be okay, and there are other
times when it would not. The problem is,
without a professional exam by an eye doctor, it
is not possible for most folks to know the right
thing to do.
Eye examinations
include both a measurement for the focus of your
eyes to determine if eyeglasses would be
beneficial, and equally important, a thorough
diagnostic evaluation for eye diseases.
Many eye diseases
have no signs or symptoms in the early stages,
and are difficult to treat when they finally
become "obvious". Early detection often can
prevent loss of vision and perhaps blindness.
My best advice is to
have a professional eye examination every year.
It is you best assurance that you eyes will last
a lifetime. Your doctor will advise you what is
best for your individual needs, even if it turns
out that you just need some common reading
glasses.
