Keratoconus
Question:
I have Keratoconus
and would like to know if you perform the Keravision
Intacs Surgery? If you do, I would like to find out
if I'm a candidate for this procedure. If not, can
you recommend a local surgeon that performs this
kind of surgery?
Answer:
Yes, we do the
Keravision Intacs
Surgery for keratoconus.
Keratoconus is the
weakness of the front cornea of the eye that lets
the curvature become distorted and then the vision
becomes distorted.
There are a few
options that can help focus your vision but in
some patients, the distortion may become
uncorrectable even with glasses or contact lenses.
When the vision cannot be cleared with these
optical treatments, then surgery may be needed and
may be the next option.
In the past, corneal
transplants were often the next step and were very
successful. They still are but the whole
transplant process and the lifetime of follow-up
is more involved.
Intacs are a
refractive surgery option that is fairly new for
treating keratoconus but is having increasing
success. It is proving to be pretty safe, simple ,
and successful.
Unfortunately, Lasik
is often never an option in patients with
keratoconus.
