Baby Boomers Fear Blindness
My patients tell me everyday, "Dr. Sibley, if I lose my vision and I lose my
driver's license, I might as well be dead."
Baby boomers may be the most independent generation ever. No one likes to
lose their independence.
Remember when you got your Driver's License and that meant independence? The
Driver's License process required you to pass three parts: the written test, the
driving test, and the vision test. For the rest of your life the vision test is
the only test they make you retake. I tell my patients that losing their license
changes the way they get around and therefore changes their life dramatically. I
agree that while they may no longer be "footloose and fancy free," I can assure
them that most poor vision can be diagnosed and treated. We now know that most
vision problems can actually be prevented, but it should start in childhood.
Don't get me wrong, poor vision is never desired and my #1 mission is to prevent
blindness and restore sight. But sometimes all my lasers are too little, too
late.
I need your help before you lose your vision ...
A recent survey found that almost 100% of Baby Boomers ranked vision as their
most important sense. Baby Boomers worry more about vision loss than cancer or
heart disease.
Now here is the scary part: Almost every Baby Boomer is actually going blind
— some faster than others. The survey proved that people do not know how
to take the simple steps to take care of their vision and prevent blindness.
Most Baby Boomers do not have an understanding about maintaining their eyes
as they grow older, and how low vision is related to the rapid deterioration of
their overall health.
Here is the good news: Most blindness is preventable and if not preventable,
then treatable. The treatment today has become so much simpler, safer and more
successful to restore vision and prevent blindness. However, macular
degeneration is a disease that blinds millions of people a year. It is estimated
that nearly 20 million patients are getting dry macular degeneration. This could
be prevented in 90% of cases, if they make some changes in their lives.
Science and research have proven that lifestyle modification, monitoring your
dietary calorie intake, stopping smoking, and proper vitamin supplementation can
help prevent this blindness.
Now the sad part: Our survey found that almost 100% of the Baby Boomers are not
taking these preventative precautions. Omega-3 fatty acids, Lutein and
Zeaxanthin are some of the newer antioxidants that everyone should be taking.
Antioxidants are the "antidote" to preventing macular degeneration. Therefore,
antioxidants (vitamin) supplements are actually able to help us prevent
blindness. (But it should actually start in childhood.)
Our survey found even scarier proof that less than 20% of Baby Boomers were
taking vitamins and supplements to support their eye health and prevent
blindness. And you know what else? These same supplements go to every cell
and help in preventing premature aging. Premature aging of your brain,
heart, bones, muscles, mental alertness, physical vitality, and your sexual
interest. Pretty important stuff, right ?
