As you age, the clear lens inside
your eye that helps focus light (similar to a camera lens) slowly grows cloudy and turns yellow.
This cloudy lens is a cataract. A cataract scatters or blocks
the light that passes into the eye. As a result, images appear
blurry.
The clouding of the
lens of the eye is usually a natural part of the aging
process. Cataracts are a major cause of vision loss in the
United States, and everyone will eventually have some
cataract formation as they get older. Most Americans over 60
have cataracts.
The exact causes are unknown but
there are risk factors associated with cataracts including
age, medical conditions, eye injuries, ultraviolet radiation,
oral steroids and other medications, and smoking.
