As you age, the clear lens inside your eye that helps focus light (similar to a camera lens) slowly grows cloudy and turns yellow. This cloudy lens is a cataract. A cataract scatters or blocks the light that passes into the eye. As a result, images appear blurry.

The clouding of the lens of the eye is usually a natural part of the aging process. Cataracts are a major cause of vision loss in the United States, and everyone will eventually have some cataract formation as they get older. Most Americans over 60 have cataracts.

The exact causes are unknown but there are risk factors associated with cataracts including age, medical conditions, eye injuries, ultraviolet radiation, oral steroids and other medications, and smoking.
